My week at Sift

Sift Media and PracticeWEB recently played host to enthusiastic Naomi Trembath who joined us for a week's work experience at Sift Towers. We kept her suitably busy but Naomi took everything we threw at her in her stride. I'm sure everyone agrees she did a great job in helping us out. We asked her to keep track on what she had been up to during the week. Here's her blog post:

My week at Sift…

My alarm clock rings at 7 am on a Monday morning to which I respond with a feeling of unfamiliarity and shock due to spending the majority of my summer holiday crawling out of bed at a considerately later time - I had forgotten about this time of day! But it soon kicks in why I am up at this insanely early hour - I am starting my week's work experience at Sift!

On arrival I am met by John in reception who directs me to the top floor that takes me up to Sift Media. Expecting to be situated near a photocopier or a kettle as these are common hang outs for any of you who have done work experience, I am instead directed to a proper desk. I am rapidly introduced to various members of Sift Media who are happy to chat away to me and offer me tea and carrot cake; I am already beginning to like the feel of this place.

During my time at Sift Media I am given a detailed schedule each day, which to my surprise has all been done by a member of Sift Media who is suffering from a temperature and is sick in bed. I am given various tasks over the course of the two days, including research on Sift's major competitors along with helping to promote some of their up and coming events. This included the SSA12 awards in which I am given an induction by Darren and Matt and asked to develop an email to encourage shortlists to purchase a table. Along with helping with the launch of the Accounting Web Live event in which I am asked to research the event and develop a series of tweets and emails to promote the event.

On Wednesday I moved into the HR & office coordination department with Georgina and Lauren. In which I helped with some health and safety as well as helping to redesign Sift's HR forms and make them snazzier.

By now I am getting used to working life and the early starts and spend my final two days with the smiley and friendly client services team at PracticeWEB. I began my day on Thursday with Ady who gave me an induction into the complex computer programme of ‘Sugar’ in which I helped her research various accountancy firms’ cases. Shortly after I met Chris who explained the various website packages that Practice Web offers.

Later on in the day Sarah gave me an insight into the weekly and monthly newsletter she writes for accountancy firms and afterwards I gave Gareth a hand with some keyword research for accountancy firms.

My final day came around so quickly I couldn’t quite believe it. I spent the morning researching and writing a test article on inheritance tax which - if I am honest – I knew little about and didn't realise would be so confusing!

All in all my week at Sift has been a great insight into the world of digital media. I have learnt all sorts of weird and wonderful things from a group of welcoming and exuberant staff and have got stuck into all the tasks that have come my way. Thanks Sift for a great week :)!
